One of my favorite things about my job is the opportunity to work with authors. Their dedication and motivation to produce an entire book (or two, or three!) amazes me, as does their ability to take complicated concepts and create easy-to-read chapters for students and professionals. What’s even more inspiring is that many of them teach, research, write articles and essays, AND stay active online!

Institute of Medicine report recommends breastfeeding to avert childhood obesity

Donated to the public domain by the creator Matt DaigleA new report from the Institute of Medicine recommends ways to prevent obesity in children from birth to age five. The list includes parents monitoring their children’s growth, increasing physical activity, encouraging healthful diets, and breastfeeding “exclusively for the first six months and then with complementary food until the child is at least 1 year old.”

In an effort to increase breastfeeding awareness and practice, the report urges improved access to lactation care in hospitals and health care settings “by implementing the steps outlined in the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative and following the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) policy recommendations.”

Further, it encourages hospitals to enforce the World Health Organization’s International Code of Marketing Breast Milk Substitute by ensuring that informational materials from hospitals “show no pictures or text that idealizes the use of breast-milk substitutes.” Additionally, it recommends that health care professionals refrain from giving formula samples to new mothers and cease advertising these products to the general public.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, while 75% of mothers begin breastfeeding when they give birth, only 13% continue to breastfeed exclusively at six months. To help increase breastfeeding outside health care settings, the report suggests requiring the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), the Child for Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), Early Head Start, and home visitation programs to support breastfeeding. Since returning to employment outside the home is one of the biggest reasons why women stop breastfeeding, the report encourages workplace lactation programs that create a safe and accepting environment for breastfeeding mothers.

First Lady Advocates for Breastfeeding Mothers

Boghosian, White House photographer [Public domain], via Wikimedia CommonsFirst Lady Michelle Obama recently championed the benefits of breastfeeding in a speech encouraging healthy eating habits at child centers to help reduce childhood obesity. In support of the Let’s Move initiative, the First Lady announced Let's Move Child Care, a five-step program, “with an easy checklist so providers know some very easy steps that they can take to make kids healthy.” These five steps include physical activity, limiting screen time, serving a fruit or vegetable at every meal, and her favorite, “serve only water, low-fat milk, or 100 percent juice.”

In addition, the final step in the initiative seeks to support breastfeeding mothers. The First Lady added that,

“Whether we do it in our workplaces or in our child care facilities, breastfeeding, as we have learned, is one of the ways to reduce the level of obesity in a child. The longer a mother can breastfeed, the better off a child will be on a whole range of health issues. And I know here at CentroNia that you all are working to make sure that mothers can bring their milk to their child on a daily basis. Those are the kind of things that workplaces -- that we all need to understand is an important part of a family’s well being and a child’s health.”

A History of American Nursing

I recently stumbled across this interesting piece from Scrubs Magazine, titled A list of rules for nurses…from 1887. In addition to cleaning chimneys and avoiding dancing, nurses in the late 19th century looked forward to a five cent pay increase…after five years of hard work! Thank goodness times have changed. Has anyone else come across resources on the history of the nursing profession? Feel free to share!

About the Author:

Lachel Story is a tenure track Assistant Professor at the University of Southern Mississippi School of Nursing in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Dr. Story has been teaching at Southern Miss for more than 7 years in the baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral programs.

Dr. Story started her nursing career more than 16 years ago as an LPN. She received her BSN and MSN from Southern Miss and her PhD in Nursing from the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Her program of research includes funded community-based participatory research projects with a focus on Community Health Advisors, adult learning principles, and health disparities.

She has publications and presentations regarding innovative teaching strategies, program evaluation, and her research.
