"Fundamentals of Game Development is a book that should be required in every freshmen level university classroom that teaches anything about game development," said Nathaniel Stevens, Managing Editor at digitalchumps.com, in his review of the newly published text by industry veterans Heather Maxwell Chandler and Rafael Chandler. This is the first text in Jones & Bartlett Learning's new Foundations of Game Development Series.

It provides a hands-on approach using examples and exercises to walk the reader through the entire process of developing a game from concept to completion. The book covers the basic topics discussed in an introductory text as well as history, game genres, design, story-telling, character creation, pre-production, code release, career descriptions, and more.

Nathan goes on to describe this text as "a perfect, basic guide to an industry."

Not only will it open eyes to the students about what they may want to do in the industry, but it provides excellent explanations of how the industry works in almost every facet. The read is not complicated, rather it's easy. From quick history lessons to job breakdowns to examples/samples of jobs this book has it all. It's not too specific, but it is a great guide to different options for budding game developers.

Digitalchumps.com also reviewed Game Engine Gems, Volume 1 by Eric Lengyel. Reviewer Steven McGehee awarded this title with an 8.0 out of a possible 10.0

A good technical read that covers a lot of great game engine topics and much of the inter-workings of those topics... the articles (gems) themselves cover a variety of interesting topics that keep the pace and flow of the book interesting.
